Sound Out! Youth Music event – Carnival special October 2022

Sound Out gives a platform for young people to perform their own music, dance or spoken word. We run outdoor events over the summer, but every autumn we run a big Sound Out event in Hoxton Hall itself. The Young Leaders group assists with the organization of the event and invites performers from Hoxton Hall Youth Arts program and opens the invitation to young performers from across Hackney. This Sound Out had 20 performers taking part, including Carnival dance, Hosting, and Musicians.

Many of the musicians are performing original tracks fresh from Hoxton Hall recording studio. We have weekly sessions run by our Youth Music Coordinators.

Sound Out this autumn was supported by Hackney Carnival. Some of our young musicians were due to perform on the Youth Takeover stage at Hackney Carnival this year, however as Carnival was cancelled Hackney Carnival supported us to invite Youth Takeover performers to take part in our event. Through our Half term project and the Sound Out event we collaborated with Hackney based Carnival groups Dimensions and Tropical Isles, who ran workshops in Carnival Dance and carnival costume making.

‘Good for Girls’ Project

Our ‘Good for Girls’ project has been running since the beginning of the year. The group meet every Tuesday and take part in ‘talking circles’ team games and activities to raise awareness of our mental health and how to support ourselves and each other. With Funding from London Youth, the group ran a social action project inviting other young women and non-binary young people to work with a vocal coach, singing empowering songs to build confidence and make new friends.

London Youth have recently provided further funding for us to continue with the group until July next year.
