One of electronic music’s most innovative characters, 2018 has seen Sega Bodega release his most ambitious and wide-reaching projects to date to increasing acclaim. As a founding member of boundary-pushing collective NUXXE, Sega was recently featured in Dazed & Confused’s prestigious Dazed 100 list, a list of the most influential artists operating in art and media today, and alongside his own solo releases has collaborated with like-minded artists such as Quay Dash, oklou and Shygirl.
The second half of 2018 has seen Sega focus on self*care, a multi-disciplinary project that represents his most realised work to date and will continue into 2019 with a brand new live show. Exploring the topic of self-preservation in its many guises, self*care launched in October with a six-track EP that found Sega placing his own vocals at the forefront of his music for the first time, resulting in one of the year’s best-received experimental pop projects and racking up 100,000 streams in a month.
Not content to restrict self*care to a solely audio project, November saw Bodega team up with six of his favourite directors, including Brooke Candy, Tash Tung and BEA1991, for a series of short films inspired by the project’s theme. To ensure that these films went beyond the scope of regular music videos, the directors weren’t played the music until they’d shot the films, ensuring that the results were as close to their individual interpretations of self*care as possible. The films were then released in collaboration with Boiler Room’s film channel 4:3, and debuted at a sold-out screening at London’s Castle Cinema, a recently-restored heritage cinema that was first opened in 1913.
The next part of the self*care story takes the part of a new live show from Bodega. Made in collaboration with Shaun Murphy (show designer for TNGHT, Lorenzo Senni, Lanark Artefax, Bicep and more), the show will debut at London’s Hoxton Hall theatre in February 2019, and features Sega singing and manipulating his vocals live on stage for the first time, further cementing his status as one of the avant-garde’s most exciting prospects.
