My name is Daria and I’m a student from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Part of my degree is to go on a professional placement in my third year, which in my case happens to be here at Hoxton Hall. Learning what it is to work in the creative industry amidst a global pandemic can be described as many things: strange, frustrating, almost impossible? Ever since coming to Hoxton Hall, however, I prefer the word adventurous. The past four weeks have been full of discoveries, many games of Splat (socially distanced, of course), and a sense of almost normality. Having the chance to be part of on-site workshops in drama, art and dance, and meeting some very talented and inspiring young people has truly been a silver lining in these cloudy times and I feel extremely lucky.
It’s been really exciting to get an insight into the youth arts sessions and learn from some very experienced practitioners in their respective fields. All of the classes offer not only a chance to learn some new skills or practice a type of art, but they also provide a space to create friendships, improve a young person’s wellbeing, and simply have fun. The level of care and passion that goes into developing these workshops has been beyond refreshing.
One of the most remarkable moments so far was having One Drum Foundation come and share the secrets of fixing a kpanlogo drum and showing us how to play and dance to its rhythms. But most importantly – creating some amazing memories and learning a bit about West Africa during that half-term week. And now with the second lockdown you’d think things would have to be put on hold, at least for a bit. Thankfully, Hoxton Hall has been there, done that. Switching to online delivery has happened almost instantly and now I’m excited to learn more about working with participants digitally. We already had dance and art sessions on Zoom this week and working in this type of setting seems to be working quite well, so I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what comes next!
And finally, a big thank you to the team and all the young people for making me feel welcomed and supported on my venture here at Hoxton Hall! This is truly an invaluable experience, and I’m honored to be part of it!
